The Maladaptive Daydreaming Recovery Program

After years of struggling with maladaptive daydreaming, conducting research, and coaching maladaptive daydreamers worldwide, I have developed an all-inclusive program to overcome maladaptive daydreaming.

This program goes beyond reducing daydreaming. It also aims to shift your mindset about your daydreams, uncover the root causes of why you’re daydreaming maladaptively in the first place, and build the confidence and resilience you need to make your real life as exciting as your daydreams.

Key Elements of the Program

  • Redefine Daydreaming

The very first step is to switch your mindset: daydreaming itself isn’t the problem. The real issue is when it takes over and interferes with your life, hence, becoming maladaptive. You’ll stop seeing daydreaming as the enemy, learn about the concept of immersive daydreaming (vivid, controlled, and intentional daydreaming), and accept daydreaming as a powerful tool you were born with.

  • Discover What You've Been Escaping

Maladaptive daydreaming often begins as a way to cope with unmet needs or painful experiences you might have not been able to face when you were younger. We will reflect on when your daydreaming started to become maladaptive and what challenges or unmet needs your daydreams have been covering up all these years. Awareness is always the first step toward healing.

  • Meet Your Needs in Real Life

Once we’ve uncovered what you’ve been escaping, we’ll work on facing these unmet needs in real life. We’ll plan gentle, actionable steps to take at your own pace. Authenticity is key to meeting your needs. It all begins with asking yourself: what qualities does my daydream self have? Confidence? Creativity? Boldness? And carefully developing these traits in real life.

  • Build a Strong Life Foundation

Real life can feel heavy sometimes, and only when you’ve built a strong foundation for it can you overcome the challenges you may eventually face. You’ll learn how to sit with your feelings instead of escaping them. You’ll build emotional regulation with breathing exercises and learn to develop social skills to build genuine relationships in real life.

  • Gradually Reduce Daydreaming Time

Once you’ve addressed the root causes of your maladaptive daydreaming, it’s time to gradually reduce it. We’ll use psychological strategies such as allocating specific times for daydreaming, tracking your triggers and urges, practicing self-monitoring, urge surfing, and implementation intentions. The goal isn’t to erase your imagination, but to put it back under your control.

  • Create a Relapse Prevention Plan

Long-lasting change means preparing for setbacks. Together, we’ll build a relapse prevention plan so you know exactly how to get back on track if old habits resurface. With the right tools and mindset, you’ll no longer identify as a maladaptive daydreamer but rather as someone fully present in their real, fulfilling life.
